Sustaining the National Malaria Control Programme in the regions of Dodoma and Iringa, Tanzania  (CUAMM)

In Tanzania, Doctors with Africa CUAMM has contributed to the reduction of malaria-related morbidity and mortality. On the one hand, the organisation continuously strengthened the operational capabilities of the National Malaria Control Programme of the Ministry of Health. On the other hand, it supported the country in reducing the burden of malaria by focusing on prevention and malaria control activities at district level, specifically in the central and southern regions of Dodoma and Iringa.

With these activities – which were an integral part of the annual districts plans – Doctors with Africa Cuamm has contributed to improving:

  • the management of malaria cases in health structures, through training of laboratory and clinical staff, staff supervision and by providing laboratories and health centres with equipment and medicines.
  • malaria prevention with adequate and appropriate measures, such as suggested treatments for pregnant women and provision and promotion of insecticide treated nets.
  • epidemic control measures by establishing an appropriate database system in areas at risk, by providing local authorities with equipment for epidemic control and through training of staff.
  • malaria control at community and household level by enhancing the training, supervision and promotion of drug sellers and health visitors as well as through awareness raising activities at community level and in primary schools.
  • Promotion of operational research at district level by collecting data, setting up epidemiological centres and monitoring the efficiency of anti malaria medicines.
  • the operational capabilities in the fight against malaria at district level, by training specialized staff, improving communication and by establishing a referral regional office.

All activities have been planned by each district annually, in accordance with available resources and priorities set by the District Council.
