Foundation of Humanitarian Aid
„Redemptoris Missio” – Medicus Mundi Poland (MMP)
The humanitarian aid Foundation “Redemptoris Missio” has been established in the year 1992 at the Medical Faculty, Poznan. Although it deals mainly with the Polish Catholic missions abroad it acts irrespective of religion, nationality, age and gender. It has three basic aims: training doctors, nurses, students and missionaries in basic elements of tropical medicine and global health; offer to the missions a personal support (medical doctors, nurses, students) as well as a material support (medicines, dressings, medical information); propagate information on missionary activities and developing countries problems among the students and in the society at large.
The Foundation has strong formal links with Poznan University of Medical Sciences and Archdiocese of Poznań. It is supported financially by over 5.000 benefactors.
The Foundation has links with the Missionary Formation Center in Warsaw, which is an agenda of Mission Committee at the Polish Episcopate. The Center is involved in administration of the Catholic missions abroad and is preparing a group of about 40 clerical and laity missionaries for missions around the world during a year formation course.
The Foundation is issuing for last five years a quarterly bulletin Medicus Mundi Poland, dealing with some basic medical problem and the news from the Foundation and the Clinic, from Medicus Mundi International, World Health Organization and Pontifical Council for Health Pastoral Care in Vatican. The quarterly is printed in 1000 – 1500 copies and distributed widely. In Poland it is the only source of information about the recent Catholic Bishops conferences in Africa (Kampala, Uganda and Cotonou, Benin) and offers a Polish translation of some articles published in Dolentium Hominum, the Vatican medically oriented magazine.
The annual Foundation reports give data on a personnel support given to the missions which reflects well some similar activities in the past years.
There were medical professionals sent to the missions (medical doctors, medical students and a nurse) - in 2007 to Uganda, Cameroon and Tanzania. In 2008 foundation is opening its own health center in Kiabakari in Tanzania.
In the year 2007 the medical students were working at the Foundation Center for Volunteers and have prepared over 140 parcels with medicines, dressings and medical equipment sent to over 40 Mission hospitals in 18 developing countries.
The society at large (not only in Poznan area) is contacted by Foundation in various ways with information on the needs of poor people around the globe and a possible ways to help them. There are regular local radio broadcast twice a month and sporadic regional TV programs. On a quarterly basis over 7.000 people are receiving a Foundation news bulletin “Raport”. The Foundation’s activities are reported and scientific articles on the actual situation in poor countries and global health problems are published annually in Annales Missiologicae Posnanienses. Some professional articles are submitted sporadically to a physician’s chamber monthly journal.
