Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV)
Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV) was established in 1999 as a not-for-profit public-private partnership to discover and develop new, effective and affordable antimalarial drugs, and to deliver these to vulnerable populations. This integrated approach provides for innovative and effective ways of developing new treatment solutions urgently needed for the 3.2 billion people at risk from malaria. Through its collaboration with over 80 pharmaceutical, academic, and endemic-country partners, MMV is currently managing nearly 40 antimalarial projects, including 19 completely new classes of drugs in the discovery phase. Of the six projects in clinical development, four are artemisinin combination therapies, which will be registered by stringent regulatory authorities and are expected to gain market authorization between 2008 and 2010. This is a significant improvement from six years ago, when the pipeline for antimalarials was virtually empty.
MMV receives funding and support from government agencies (UK, USA, Netherlands, Ireland, Switzerland), private foundations, international organizations, and corporate foundations. Research and development (R&D) supported by industry-style project and portfolio management lies at the core of MMV’s operations. R&D is carried out in the labs and clinical trial sites of its research partners and industry partners contribute with staff, facilities, and technology. As a result, MMV is also able to leverage in-kind contributions worth tens of millions of dollars while its technology base remains extremely flexible and state-of-the-art. With the largest-ever portfolio of antimalarials today, MMV is working to ensure that its products are considered ‘public goods’ to enable the greatest possible public health impact.
