In the run up to the first World Malaria Day, the International Malaria Conference
“Malaria: Joining Forces, Synergising Action - Sustainable and innovative ways of ensuring long-term availability of prevention and treatment measures by 2015” took place from April 21st - 22nd 2008 in Bonn, Germany. 120 experts from 20 African, European and North-American countries analysed effective malaria control strategies, new initiatives in malaria research and development as well as innovative ways of sustainable financing for the fight against malaria in developing countries. Moreover, participants discussed the roles and activities of governments, civil society and the private sector in achieving universal access to malaria prevention, diagnosis and treatment by 2015.

The conference was organised by the European-African Malaria Campaign Stop Malaria Now! in cooperation with the German Red Cross and the German Foundation for World Population as German members of the European Alliance against Malaria.

The outcome of the conference is an international position paper containing recommendations and demands for the global fight against malaria that was worked out by the participants.
