Supporting Community Responses to Malaria

The Global Fund to fight HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria is an important actor on the international stage of development cooperation. Raising financial support from governments, private foundations and corporations to fight the three diseases, the Global Fund provides around 60% of all international funding for the fight against malaria.

Even though Community Based Organizations (CBOs) contribute most to the fight against malaria and other poverty diseases by including community members in their work and by informing their communities about the respective prevention and treatment measures, they are often not involved in decisions and do not get access to the funds approved.

In June and July 2009 STOP MALARIA NOW! in cooperation with a Kenyan partner organization conducted an assessment on the problems local organizations face when they want to get financial support from the Global Fund.

On the basis of the findings a training manual as well as training workshops were developed to strengthen the knowledge and capacities of CBOs regarding the application for grants from the Global Fund.

The training workshops took place from the 23rd to the 27th November 2009 in Kisumu and from the 7th to the 11th December 2009 in Malindi
