Challenges

The burden of malaria persists due to several reasons. They include lack of information about the disease itself and malaria control instruments especially among rural populations of malaria endemic countries. Moreover, the insufficient coverage of prevention and treatment measures pose a major obstacle to effective malaria control. Another difficulty is the failure to monitor, predict and respond quickly and adequately to epidemic outbreaks due to missing human and financial resources. Insufficient developed health information systems and a general lack of operational research are further challenges to combat the disease in many countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Furthermore, military conflicts, unstable political circumstances, extreme poverty and natural disasters worsen this situation leading to a collapse of health services and supply lines and often force people to leave their land and homes.
